Birds of the Nearctic Realm
by c. artuso
The Nearctic realm stretches from Alaska across to Greenland and down as
far as northern Mexico. Its exact border with the Neotropical realm is the
topic of some debate. Over 800 species of birds are found in the Nearctic
realm.
Since moving to Winnipeg in September 2000, I have been photographing
the birds of this region - which presents different challenges from photographing
birds in the tropics! Although most of my birding here has been in Manitoba,
I have managed a few trips further afield.
I have used the accepted North American common names for species
and put alternative names beside them in brackets. The abbreviation
"f:" indicates "formerly" and is used to give the former names of recently
split species. The status of endangered species (according to Birdlife International)
is given in brackets.
Species are listed in alphabetical order of their common names.
The images featured are changed periodically.
